Peoria Hollin Scruggs Bolden 1916-1989

I am remembering my grandmother/mother today.
Peoria Hollin Scruggs Bolden
May 25, 1916 - October 11, 1989
I miss her smile, her laugh, her wisdom and the irregular heartbeat through her chest.
I miss her low-pitched voice, her three-textured long hair, and her amazing spirit.
Mama was a giver, a teacher, a debater, and a helper.
She could sew, cook, clean, sing, pray, read and write.
Mama loved all her children in their uniqueness and their individuality.
She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, god-son, siblings, nieces, nephews & cousins too!
Mama was a true friend to many.
She was an amazing woman, wife, and mother.
She was a woman of God and not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I don't miss her with sadness, I miss her presence and her wisdom.
I miss her biscuits and sweet-rolls too. I'm glad she's resting in peace with no pain and suffering.
I'm glad I knew her.... I know you are too!

Rondo City Hall

Hi, I started a Rondo Arkansas Facebook Page.

I found out there was another one - it is hard to fathom that Rondo changed or grew any when I left Arkansas in June 1970 so I don't accept the other page. Who are those folks anyway?

Enjoy.

Pictures of Merdean Fielding Gales

According to the history on the Scruggs side, Merdean is the cousin of all the siblings.

She sings with Bobby Jones Gospel Group - and has for many, many years.

Allean (my mom) told me about Merdean many years ago.

Enjoy the photographs.

Sad Announcement

With great sorrow we announce the passing of Melvyn's mother Mrs. Emma Rumble Lyas whom we affectionately called Cookie Grandma and Mama Lyas.

Mrs. Lyas passed on Sunday May 9, 2010 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut from complications of surgery.

She leaves four sons: Peter Lyas of California, the twins - Kenneth (of North Carolina) and Karl Lyas(of Norwalk) and Melvyn Lyas (of Norwalk); she was the last of all her siblings to pass away.

Please keep Melvyn and his brothers along with all their children and grandchildren, and Cookie's nieces and nephews in your prayers.

Funeral Services will be some time later this week after final arrangements are completed. Check http://www.bakerfuneralservices.com/ for information on Tuesday.

Mrs. Lyas also had extended family in North Carolina and the Boston Massachusetts area. She was a lifelong member of the Calvary Baptist Church in South Norwalk. A Church that looked after her all the days of her life, especially her Deacons Vernell and Robert Brandon and Dee Dee Hilliard! She also had many loving neighbors and friends who looked out for her as well because they loved her so much. Please remember her personal nurse, Patti Thompson who labored in love for her this past year.

We will miss Cookie, so pray for us all. Thank you and God bless you.

Phyllis

A Conversation with Aunt Edna Mae McFadden today

Phyllis dials Chicago and when the phone is answered: Aunt Edna - Hey -- how are you?

This is Phyllis Bolden, Happy New Year!

Aunt Edna: WHO?

PHYLLIS: Phyllis Bolden

(we do this 3 times statement and response)

AUNT EDNA Finally: -- OH!!! PHYLLIS it’s so good to hear your voice baby!

PHYLLIS: I said -- Happy NEW YEAR!

Aunt Edna: Happy New Year to you too baby! Do you know how old I am now?:

Phyllis: Yes -- 101 BACKWARDS!

Aunt Edna: AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That’s a good one -- and you are so right!
I’m 101 years old and still pushing -- and pushing- and pushing - and I’m gonna keep on pushing!
Oh the things I’ve seen in my lifetime and the things going on today!

Phyllis: Isn’t it something Aunt Edna - so bad…

Aunt Edna cuts in: Oh honey, it’s nothing new, it’s just the Bible fulfilling itself, everything God said in the Word it is coming to pass -- just the Bible fulfilling itself, fulfilling itself, it’s happening right now, right this very moment. You can talk about the world and everything going on but you can’t change a thing because it’s the Bible -- fulfilling itself, just like the Lord said it would!
But I’M STILL HERE! Hallelujah! A century and one.
(Phyllis concurs over and over between Aunt Edna’s comments about the fulfillment of the Bible and her age)
(She thanked us for calling her on her birthday December 25th - Christmas Day and said she loves the family so much)
AUNT EDNA CONTINUES: I got up on my birthday -- first call 7:14 am -- and I stayed RIGHT THERE because I knew it was going to happen alllllllllllllll day long and it did. Then the next day too! It happens like that every year, whoever don’t get me on my birthday will call me the next day and I be ready -- right next to the phone, oh! I just love it and I just love my family! Thank you Jesus!
The Home Health Aide didn’t come today so my downstairs, wonderful neighbor will come fix my breakfast for me instead, such a wonderful, beautiful soul!

PHYLLIS: Aunt Edna, how’s Aunt Jeffrey Mae?

AUNT EDNA: Oh -- she’s good -- she’d love to do everything for me but she can’t anymore. Bless her heart -- she’s always been so sweet to me and I love her for that.
WANNA HEAR SOMETHING FUNNY?

PHYLLIS: Yes Aunt Edna, tell me.

AUNT EDNA: Well, I fell.

PHYLLIS INTERRUPTS!: Oh NO! Are you okay???

AUNT EDNA: Yes sweetie I’m fine, just fine -- let me tell you what’s funny.

PHYLLIS: ok.

AUNT EDNA: I fell three times!

PHYLLIS: when?

AUNT EDNA: As of late - It’s been two years since I fell and like I said I fell three times lately.
I called 911 to get me up. They come out - the paramedics or the firemen and they help me up look me over and ask if I want to go to the Doctor. I tell them no -- I’m in no pain.

PHYLLIS: Why did you fall Aunt Edna?

AUNT EDNA: - Girl, these old knees just give out sometimes and I’m not aware, I have my walker and never know it is going to happen so I end up on the floor but thank God I haven’t gotten hurt, just bumped, my biggest concern is to get up off that floor. WELL BACK TO THE FUNNY STORY HONEY:
I had just fallen, the paramedics got me up and I wasn’t sitting in the chair 10 minutes after the paramedics were gone then Jeffrey Mae called and said “I fell aunt Edna” and I said, “did you call 911 for the paramedics?” Jeffrey Mae said, “no, that’s embarrassing, I couldn’t bring myself to do it.” I said, well how did you get up honey?” she said, oh Aunt Edna I just struggled and rolled and struggled and rolled until I was able to pull myself up!” I said, shoot, I woulda come help you but I was on the floor myself! Jeffrey Mae said, “oh my I fell on the floor just like you Aunt Edna and I wasn‘t there to help you!” I said to Jeffrey Mae Honey I just call 911 and they help me right up, look over me and make sure I don’t need a doctor or the Emergency Room; as far as you go I know you love me but you falling on the floor?
“That’s the wrong copycat girl” you don’t need to be falling on the floor and all - a few minutes in between! (Okay -- right here is where we laughed hysterically for many minutes).

PHYLLIS: How’s Alfred Bolden, Jr. doing? I KNOW you see him all the time because he’s got Edna McFadden on his mind!

AUNT EDNA EXCLAIMS:

Oh!!!!!!!!! Alfred Bolden Jr. --

He’s my momma-poppa-my everything!!! (Alfred Bolden, Jr.)
He takes care of me baby!!!
Jr - gets my groceries, takes care of my bills, my check every month -- everything I want he does it.
Comes in here, wash dishes, vacuum he’ll dust -- he does everything for me!
If it weren’t for him, I’d have to go to a nursing home!
Takes care of me REAL GOOD - doesn’t miss a week, sometimes comes both Sunday and Saturday.
He calls me all the time, he makes me feel so special.
I don’t know what I’d do without him (Alfred Bolden, Jr.)

PHYLLIS: Aunt Edna that is a pure blessing from God, you deserve it too.

AUNT EDNA: I sure thank him baby, I surely thank him - - Hey -- that’s the doorbell ringing….

PHYLLIS: Aunt Edna, that was a wonderful conversation a blessing to hear your voice, go get the door.

AUNT EDNA: Yes Baby -- I am SO HAPPY that you called and I love you and the family so much!
Call again soon Okay?

PHYLLIS: Yes Ma’am -- Love you!

AUNT EDNA: Love you too -- bye!

Happy New Year
